1,189 sentenced for political violence since 2022, Murkomen tells Senate
A total of 1,189 people have been sentenced for offences linked to political violence and goonism since 2022, Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has told the Senate.
Murkomen said the sentences varied depending on the gravity of the offences, adding that the figures showed the government’s efforts to combat political violence.
The CS said the government remained committed to addressing goonism and political violence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“This is part of the evidence for those who say that the police are doing nothing to arrest goons,” Murkomen said.
He was responding to questions from senators during a Senate Plenary session on matters of national security and government service delivery.
Disaster Preparedness
Murkomen also told the Senate that the government was on course to implement the National Disaster Risk Management Strategy 2025–2030.
He said the strategy was part of broader interventions aimed at strengthening the country’s preparedness and response to disasters and emergencies, including the expected October–December (OND) El Niño rains.
“The National Disaster Operations Centre continues to coordinate disaster preparedness and response at the national level under a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach,” the CS said.
Murkomen further reassured senators that the country was safe, saying the government had made significant progress in addressing security threats and continued to strengthen service delivery across the country.
