Power Blackout Paralyses Lamu Election Preparations

A power blackout is threatening to derail IEBC preparations in Nyonoro area of Lamu county after a suspected  Al shabaab militants attack.

The Al Shabab militants are suspected to be behind the bombing of an electricity pylon on Mondday morning

They have claimed responsibility for the said attack.

The Kenya Power Manager, Benard Kataka confirmed that there was indeed a  blackout and said that the damage of the pylon was extensive and costly to repair.

He however assured the residents of power restoration before the end of Monday.

He said he did not understand the motive behind the destruction but said that maybe the militants wanted to paralyze communication in the area.

About 16000 houses have been affected by the power outage,

Although most of the polling stations are powered by generators ,IEBC officials  in the area said that the outage will affect the set up of some of the equipment.

The IEBC officials will be expected to fully charge the gadgets ahead of tomorrow’s polls.

There has been delays in distribution of equipment in the area due to security reasons

It is also impossible to transport the equipment without police escort in the area.

The voters in Lamu are also anxious of casting their votes owing to the dusk to dawn curfew that is in place.

IEBC has however assured residents of security on the day of elections.
