A total of  2,063 medical practitioners and 212 dental practitioners have been de-registered by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board over eligibility issues.

According to the Board, the practitioners failed to comply with Section 13 and 14 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act.

“Notwithstanding any of the other provisions of this Act, the Board may, if it is satisfied that it is in the public interest to do so, confer upon any person who is not otherwise eligible to be registered as a medical practitioner or as a dentist under the provisions of this Act, by the issue, under the signature of the Director of Medical Services, of a licence to do so, the right to render medical or dental services,” states Section 13 of the Act.

“Every such licence shall be for such period and may contain such conditions as the Director of Medical Services shall, with the consent or on the instruction of the Board, impose.”

This comes at the wake of escalating numbers of quack doctors in the country, especially in the informal settlements who have been putting the lives of Kenyans at risk.

Axed practitioners who want to be re-instated have been told to re-apply for their annual retention through the Board’s website, where their names will be posted.
