Police officers on Wednesday disrupted a peaceful meeting being held by Mathare residents.
The officers who were in plain clothes and are well known to the residents stormed the meeting and asked the people to head on home.
“We know some of the officers. We tried to explain what was going on and asked them to let us proceed but the inspector was not convinced and continued to ask us to leave,” a resident said told the STAR.
The police are said to have suspected the residents of plotting to cause chaos in the area right after NASA’s big announcement that is supposed to take place today.
One of the residents, Alphonse Were, however refuted the claims saying they were only discussing issues affecting the community.
“We were meeting at a social hall within Hospital ward when police in civilian clothes with walkie-talkies stormed in and ordered us to leave,” he said.
Were also noted that the tension was still high after the violence that rocked the area over the weekend. He however said that the meetings were important to guarantee co-existence.

The meeting, he said was in collaboration with Peace Net Kenya.
Mathare was one of the areas where chaotic protests were experienced after President Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the duly elected president.
The residents were not happy with the outcome as their preferred candidate, Raila Odinga had ‘unfairly’ lost.
A child, Stephanie George was shot dead during the protests.
