Governor Anne Waiguru’s county is facing a serious financial crisis that has seen it fail to meet the requirements to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri today revealed that Kirinyaga county is unprepared to deal with the pandemic.

The county is reportedly yet to meet the 300 bed requirement in line with the President’s directive, signalling a disaster should the corona virus cases in the county increase.

The county has so far confirmed two cases of Corona Virus with a number of people with more suspected cases in quarantine.

We have 14 beds only in our isolation ward at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, which is inadequate,’ Mr Ndambiri told a burial ceremony at Ndindiruku village in Mwea Sub-county.

“The level of Covid-19 preparedness is below average.”

Mr. Ndambiri attributed the shortage to a budget stalemate between the governor and ward representatives.

He said that the lack of medicines in hospitals, dispensaries ad other health facilities was due to the lack of funds.

Mr. Ndambiri requested the MCAs and the governor to put the Kirinyaga people’s interest at heart.

“When Ms Waiguru and MCAs fight it is residents in dire need of services who suffer,” he stated.

He challenged both parties to soften their stance and find a way to work together with the purpose of fighting the pandemic and developing projects in the county.

“County operations have almost ground to a halt because MCAs have shot down the Executive’s budget. I’m concerned about the stalemate,” he said.

“The warring politicians should come down from their ivory towers and end the fight which has adversely affected the county.”

The deputy governor advised Kirinyaga residents to observe basic health measures such as washing hands and wearing masks at all times.

“This disease is real so residents should be careful,” he said.
