President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday flew from the State House in Nairobi to join ODM leader Raila Odinga in Kisumu to inspect the Kisumu Port, in what was termed as an unexpected visit.

According to reports, the President was picked by three Kenya Air Force helicopters and took him to Kisumu, in an event where media and members of the public were barred from witnessing.

Kisumu port resumed oil exports to Uganda in December 2019, and the refurbishment of the old railway line is set to make it a business hub for Kenya, Uganda and other neighbouring landlocked countries.

The port which has been dormant for more than two decades is poised to spur transport business across Lake Victoria.

On average Uganda imports 85 million litres of fuel with demand growing at 7 percent per annum.

92 per cent of the oil is imported through the Mombasa port in Kenya, while only eight per cent arrives via Dar es Salaam on the Tanzanian coast.
