Ex-Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was on Tuesday charged with 12 counts, among them assault, robbery with violence, and destruction of property.

The former governor was arraigned at the Kiambu Law Courts where he was charged with assaulting Evans Obaga, George Chege, Paul Kahiga, and Charles Karori.

According to the charge sheet seen by this writer, Sonko is said to have led a group of men to Buruburu Phase 4 in Kamukunji sub-county, Nairobi on May 25, 2019, where they assaulted the above-mentioned victims.

He has also been charged with forcibly entering land No. LR Nairobi Block 78/863 belonging to Landmark International Properties Ltd, on the same day at around 1400 hrs.

The impeached governor denied all the charges and is set to know his fate on Wednesday when Kiambu chief magistrate Stella Atambo will give a ruling on his bail application.

The court heard that Sonko is a flight risk with no regard for the law and could interfere with witnesses if released on bail.

His lawyer, John Khaminwa, argued that his client should not be treated like a criminal but a whistle-blower.

“I urge you not to use the annexures because it will bring the court into disrepute and history will judge you harshly,” he said.

His lawyers also wondered why the prosecution brought forth a case in Mombasa yet he had 29 days ago been issued with a certificate of good conduct by the DCI.

The certificate meant that his record was clean.

His defense team also accused the state of punishing their client for his popularity.
