Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) on Monday reported that 37 people died between August 9 and 15, 2017 following the post election protests in some parts of the country.
“Except for two cases caused by civilians, the rest were allegedly because of excessive use of force by police,” the ‘Mirage at Dusk’ report stated.
“Out of the 126 documented cases of people who were injured, only three constituted cases of civilian-to-civilian confrontation.
“Majority of the reported cases were as a result of police aggression towards civilians.”
Another 126 sustained injuries, the report further revealed. 35 of the deaths were caused by use of excessive force by the security officers.
27 deaths occurred in Nairobi, three in Kisumu and Tana River, two in Siaya and one each in Elgeyo Marakwet and Homa Bay.
Seven minors died in the wake of the week long protests with the youngest being six month old Samantha Pendo who was clobbered by the officers in her home in Kisumu.
In Tana River, a man was stabbed to death by armed men who tried to disrupt vote tallying at the Hola Secondary School. Two of the armed gangsters were gunned down by the police.
Speaking in Nairobi, KNCHR chairperson Kagwiria Mbogori also revealed that there were cases of sexual assault against women and girls.

“There were six reported cases of sexual violence against women and girls including rape, which were perpetrated by civilians and police,” she added.
The deaths were recorded in Kawangware, Mathare, Kibera, Lucky Summer, Baba Dogo Huruma, Kondele, Manyatta, Nyamasaria, Nyalenda, Siaya town, Ugunja, Rangwe, Tana River and Elgeyo-Marakwet.
