Simona Halep is a prominent Romanian former professional tennis player, born on September 27, 1991.

She reached the pinnacle of women’s tennis by achieving the world No. 1 ranking, holding this position for a total of 64 weeks.

Halep’s rise in the tennis world began in earnest when she broke into the top 50 in 2011, followed by her entry into the top 20 in August 2013 and the top 10 by January 2014.

In late 2022, Halep’s career faced a significant challenge when she tested positive for the banned substance roxadustat.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) also identified irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport, but Halep has consistently denied any wrongdoing, attributing the positive test to a contaminated supplement.

    Siblings

Simona has one sibling, an older brother named Nicolae who is five and a half years older than her.

While information about Nicolae is not widely publicized, it is known that he played a significant role in introducing Simona to tennis.

She started playing at the age of four after going to his tennis practice. It was watching him that sparked her initial interest in the sport.

    Career

Halep’s career boasts an impressive collection of 25 WTA Tour-level titles, highlighted by her triumphs at the 2018 French Open and the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, where she secured Grand Slam victories.

Halep’s ascent through the ranks saw her break into the top 50 in 2011, followed by her entry into the top 20 in August 2013, and finally reaching the top 10 by January 2014.

A standout year in 2013 saw her capture her first six WTA titles, making her the first player since Steffi Graf in 1986 to achieve such a feat, which earned her the WTA Most Improved Player of the Year award.

Prior to her Grand Slam successes, Halep experienced near misses as a runner-up at the 2014 French Open, 2017 French Open, and 2018 Australian Open.

She also maintained a remarkable streak of remaining in the top 10 from January 2014 to August 2021, which is the eighth-longest consecutive run in WTA history.

In 2018, Halep showcased her versatility by winning both the singles and doubles titles at the Shenzhen Open, marking her first WTA doubles title.

She also reached the Australian Open final, losing to Caroline Wozniacki, and subsequently reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in late February.

A defining moment came at the French Open, where she defeated Sloane Stephens to claim her first Grand Slam title, followed by finals appearances at the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open.

However, Halep’s illustrious career encountered a significant challenge in late 2022 when she tested positive for a prohibited substance, resulting in a suspension from competition, which she has appealed.

Her career ended in an emotional farewell to the sport in Cluj in February 2025.

    Accolades

Halep’s illustrious career is highlighted by numerous accolades, including her achievement of being ranked as the world No. 1 in women’s singles by the WTA for a total of 64 weeks.

She was recognized as the year-end No. 1 in both 2017 and 2018, solidifying her status among the elite in women’s tennis.

Throughout her career, Halep won 25 WTA Tour-level titles, with two of those being Grand Slam titles: the 2018 French Open and the 2019 Wimbledon Championships.

In 2013, Halep made headlines by winning her first six WTA titles in a single season, a remarkable feat that made her the first player since Steffi Graf in 1986 to accomplish this.

Halep reached three Grand Slam finals before finally clinching her first Grand Slam singles title at the 2018 French Open, where she triumphed over Sloane Stephens.
