The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has opened an investigation into an alleged case of police brutality in Narok following the circulation of disturbing images on social media showing injuries sustained by a woman, purportedly at the hands of a police officer.
In a statement released on Tuesday, April 22, IPOA confirmed that it reached out to the victim’s family on Monday, April 21, and dispatched its Rapid Response team to initiate an independent inquiry.
Preliminary findings indicate that the victim is currently undergoing treatment at Narok Level 5 Hospital. The Authority assured the public that it is treating the case with the utmost urgency and impartiality.
“The Authority remains committed to conducting the investigation with impartiality, as it delivers its mandate of holding the police accountable,” said IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan in the statement.
The Authority, established under Cap 86 of the Laws of Kenya, is empowered to independently investigate complaints against the National Police Service, including incidents of alleged misconduct and abuse of power.
IPOA reiterated its commitment to uphold Article 244 of the Constitution, which calls for the police to maintain high standards of professionalism and transparency.
Should any officer be found culpable, the Authority pledged to recommend appropriate legal and disciplinary action.
This latest case adds to the growing public concern over police conduct in Kenya, with civil society groups calling for swift justice and greater oversight to curb the excessive use of force.
