Instilling good hygiene and self-care habits in children from a young age is crucial for their health, wellbeing and confidence as they grow up. As parents and carers, it’s our responsibility to teach children the importance of looking after themselves. Here are some tips on how to build healthy habits around hygiene and self-care with your kids.
The Basics of Personal Hygiene
- Bathing and showering – If you are fostering younger children with an agency like Fosterplus, teach children when and how often they need to wash themselves. Explain that regular bathing removes dirt, sweat and germs from their body. Encourage independence but supervise young children in the bath.
- Handwashing – Show children how to wash their hands properly with soap and water, especially after using the toilet, before eating, after playing outside and after handling pets. Make handwashing into a habit.
- Brushing teeth – Demonstrate how to brush teeth effectively twice a day. Supervise brushing until children can do it thoroughly themselves. Arrange regular dental check-ups.
- Washing hair – Help children learn to wash their hair a couple of times a week or as needed. Teach them to use kid-friendly shampoo and conditioner.
- Clean clothes – Provide clothes hampers and teach children to put dirty clothes inside. Encourage them to change into clean clothes every day, especially underwear and socks.
Developing Good Grooming Routines
- Nail care – Show children how to neatly trim and file their nails. Make sure they know to wash underneath nails when handwashing.
- Oral care – In addition to brushing, teach children to floss once a day and use mouthwash. Explain the importance of tongue cleaning too.
- Hair care – Demonstrate how to brush, style, tie and take care of hair neatly.
- Menstruation – For girls, explain menstrual hygiene and pads/tampons when the time comes.
- Washing face – Encourage face washing morning and night. Teach proper skincare suited to skin type.
- Deodorant use – Introduce deodorant when body odour arises. Explain how it controls sweat and smells.
- Shaving – Teach boys to shave when facial hair develops.
- Cleaning ears – Show the correct technique for washing outer ears. Advise not inserting cotton buds inside ears.
Building Self-Esteem and Confidence
- Be a positive role model – Lead by example with your own hygiene and grooming habits. Show children how self-care makes you feel good.
- Give praise – Compliment children when they demonstrate good hygiene and self-care. Build up their confidence.
- Encourage responsibility – Allow children age-appropriate independence in looking after themselves. This boosts their self-esteem.
- Set rewards – Offer small rewards like stickers for young kids completing hygiene tasks like toothbrushing. This motivates good behaviour.
- Make it fun – Sing songs or make up games about washing hands or brushing teeth. Bath toys can make bathing enjoyable.
- Be patient – Habits take time to build. Gently remind children if they forget to brush teeth or wash hair. Don’t reprimand.
By instilling hygiene and self-care habits from an early age, we can raise children who are healthy, confident and responsible in looking after themselves. Make hygiene routines fun and educational, and your kids will reap the benefits for life.
