A driver claims he was attacked and robbed of his car by three men he had carried as passengers at a fee to Nairobi.

The incident happened at Kyumbi area on Mombasa Highway on May 15 morning.

The driver had departed Mombasa Town with a brand new Subaru Forester salon car and was headed for Kampala, Uganda.

On the way, he offered a lift to three men who promised to pay for trip and they claimed they were headed for Nairobi.

The driver told police the men turned to be thugs when he approached the dual carriageway near Kyumbi township and strangled him, tied his hands, and then abandoned him in a bush near the Shell petrol station.

The robbers took control of the vehicle and fled to an unknown location.

The man reported the case to the local police station. Police are investigating the incident.

Another driver reported at Athi River police station sating he was headed for Uganda from Mombasa and had picked up four passengers in Kibwezi and Voi before they turned to be thugs.

Upon reaching the Lukenya area, one of the three passengers asked the driver to stop for a call of nature.

Once the vehicle stopped, it turned out that the others were robbers, who then strangled with the driver. Four more thugs appeared and overpowered the driver, he said.

They took control of the vehicle and drove towards Nairobi.

One of the passengers who boarded in Voi managed to jump out and escape as the vehicle made a U-turn to head back to Mombasa.

Police said the robbers tied the driver with a rope and abandoned him along the way.

He was later rescued by Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials who were on duty on the highway and escorted him to the police station.

The driver was robbed of his mobile phone and personal belongings.

Police have advised drivers not to offer lifts to strangers following the increased incidents of robberies.
