Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah visited detained Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya in custody and condemned the move to deny him bail.

Salasya who was on Friday arrested in Nanyuki and brought to Nairobi for questioning spent his weekend at Nairobi’s Central Station.

He is under probe over claims of false publication among others.

He was violently arrested by a team of police who had trailed him.

Police said he defied their orders to stop in Kisima area as he raced from Isiolo to Nanyuki. He had been involved in a series of rallies in the region.

Speaking after he visited the lawmaker at the Central Police Station where he is being held, Omtatah noted the lawmaker had been arrested under unclear circumstances tied to cybercrime.

He condemned his arrest stating that no leader nor citizen should be targeted without due process.

“I visited Salasya at Central Police Station following his arrest under unclear accusations tied to cybercrime. He remains strong, calm, and is fully represented by his legal team.”

“No leader or citizen should be targeted without due process. We will defend justice without fear of favour. This is a fight for truth, dignity, and the soul of our democracy,” he said.

Salasya was arrested at the Isiolo-Nanyuki road shortly after addressing a rally on Friday, May 16, 2025.

He is likely to be produced in court on Monday May 19 for charges including hate speech.

At the station, the MP’s handlers said they had been denied a chance to talk to him.

The MP however, managed to talk to Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah.

Police at the station said Salasya had refused to see any other politician.

He said he could only see Omtatah. This prompted Omtatah to see him at the station.

Salasya had earlier on narrated that he was ambushed by heavily armed individuals believed to be the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI ) officers who disarmed his team before going after him.

“I have been arrested on my way from Isiolo-Nanyuki road. I was attacked by unknown individuals claiming to be DCI officers. These people, heavily armed and moving with force, ambushed my convoy, disarmed my security team, confiscating their firearms, and pursued my vehicle,” Salasya said.

His lawyer, Mutiso Ian later told the press that the MP had been arrested for false publication and hate speech.

“He is facing a charge of false publication and matters of hate speech,” the lawyer added.
