Group invades ex-governor Tunai’s land in Kilgoris, claim ownership

There was a standoff between police and a group of invaders who stormed a land linked to former Narok County Governor Samuel Tunai in Kiligoris Pusangi area.

The group went to Angama Conservancy on Wednesday June 4 while armed with assorted weapons, claiming the land belongs to them.

Police said the group of about 300 went to the land with allegations that the conservancy is their land, which was “acquired illegally”.

Efforts to dialogue with them became futile as they turned out to be arrogant and adamant, indicating that they will stay put, police said.

Security teams arrived at the vast land and sought reinforcement from the General Service Unit, Anti Stock Theft Unit, Rapid Deployment Unit and local teams in efforts to drive out the group in vain.

This prompted tension amid fears it could boil out to chaos.

Police said the group went to the farm at about 2 am catching the security there off-guard.

The land in question is about 800 acres and has a popular hotel there.

GSU officers manning the hotel managed to repulse the group by shooting to the air causing panic among some customers who were therein.

The security teams on the ground pleaded with the group not to disrupt activities on the farm and especially the hotel.

Police said the group is demanding the presence of Tunai in the area to explain how he acquired their land.

There was no immediate comment from Tunai as his mobile phone ran unanswered.

Police on the ground believe the group was incited by some local leaders to stage the invasion.

The security team continued to engage the group in what they termed as dialogue on the way forward on Thursday amid tension.

Tunai served as a governor for Narok for two terms. He wielded immense power and wealth then which enabled him to acquire the property, locals claim.

The area has been a point of interest since six people were shot and killed in a clash with police over land in Angata Barrikoi.

Hundreds of acres of sugarcane in the area were burnt down in the chaos in May 2025.

This prompted the transfer of dozens of police officers from the area amid a probe into the deadly shooting.

Since then, cases of cattle rustling have been on the rise and so far one herder has been killed in the chaos.

The bone of contention is thousands of acres of piece of land in the area. Police say the situation remains volatile.
