At least six Indian tourists were killed and 27 injured after their bus rolled into a ditch at Gichaka, along Ol Jororok-Nakuru road, Nyandarua County.

Police said the group was travelling to Panari Resort, Nyahururu when the tour bus they were using plunged into a ditch.

This is after the driver lost its control as he negotiated a corner at a steep area.

Residents rushed to their rescue before police arrived to take the injured to the hospital.

The bus is said to have rolled into a steep area almost 100 meters deep which was challenging in the rescue mission.

Police spokesman Michael Muchiri said the tourists-28 in total and three local guides and a driver were on board the bus at the time of the accident on Monday June 9 evening.

He said the search for three other people who were not accounted for at the scene went into the night.
Police arrived at the scene and helped in clearing it.

The police said they are investigating the accident. The area is emerging as a popular destination for many tourists.

Fatal accidents are on the rise in the country amid calls for caution to address the trend.

Last week on Tuesday, at least seven people were killed when a matatu they were in was involved in a horrific road accident along the Matuu–Mwingi road in Masinga, Machakos County.

The accident occurred at Mwatungo area of Masinga sub-county.

It involved a 14-seater matatu that was traveling from Matuu towards Mwingi. In October 2023, NTSA unveiled the National Road Safety Action Plan (2023- 2027) which aims to achieve a 50 per cent reduction in deaths and severe injuries in designated high-risk demonstration corridors and urban areas.

Principal Secretary in the State Department of Transport Mohamed Daghar emphasized the urgent need for coordinated road safety efforts involving both national and county governments to enhance safety on Kenyan roads.

Up to 4,000 people are killed annually in separate accidents. Many others are left with injuries in the incidents that have a negative impact on families.
