Catholics Saturday vehemently objected to plans by President William Ruto to construct a church in State House grounds.

Through Kisii Catholic Bishop, Joseph Mairura, they told Ruto to shelve the plan further cautioning him to be conscious of the doctrine of state and church separating.

“I really did not want to be dragged into the issue so much because President William Ruto is my friend but now that you have asked it is good that I tell him that it utterly imprudent to do so,” Mairura told journalists at Cardinal High School during a celebration to mark 30 years of bishopric service.

The regional church boss said as Catholics, they were alive to the fact that church was a different entity and should not be in bed with the State.

“How many churches is he going to construct if I may ask?” posed Mairura.

The president has defended his plans to construct the church saying it will serve staff working and living there.

The cost of the building is yet to be revealed. It comes amid opposition from various parties on the same

The function at Cardinal High school was attended by among others Kisii Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo, MPs Anthony Kibagendi (Kitutu Chache South) and State House adviser Chweya Matoke.

Kibagendi took a swipe at the Kenya Kwanza government terming bad.

“The people only rejoice when there is good leaders in power not when the evil are in authority as it is our country,” he told the hundreds of congregations who turned up.

He accused the president of turning a blind eye to the myriad challenges facing ordinary Kenyans.

The Kenya Kwanza administration, Kibagendi stated, had failed to offer tangible solutions to the country’s economic hardships, spiraling cost of living, and growing youth unemployment.

“The people are suffering. Prices of basic commodities are beyond reach, jobs are scarce, and there’s no clear plan from State House to ease this burden,” said the youthful MP.

He said good leadership demands that President Ruto not to lose touch with reality.

Obebo, on his part, asked the church to pray for state leaders.

“We need God’s hand now more than ever. I urge the church to remain steadfast in prayer for peace, unity, and prosperity in our nation,” he said.
