Kenyans will now not be able to import vehicles over 5 years old if the government implements the law to ban vehicles that have been registered abroad for five years before being brought into the country.

The move to lower the age of cars from 8 years to 5 years has caused traders to raise the alarm to the government saying that the move will hurt buyers since they will now pay up to 50% more in order to buy cars.

Car Importers Association Chairman, Peter Otieno, criticized the government saying that Kenyans will no longer be able to afford cars since only 2% of Kenyans buy vehicles that are used for less than 5 years.

He says that the government will also lose Sh.13 billion on taxes per month. The number of used car imports is 23,000 on a monthly basis and the ban will reduce the number to 4000 vehicles.

Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Aden Mohamed proposed the reduction of second hand cars age limit in order to reduce the snarl up on the Kenyan roads and also boost local motor vehicle assembling business in the country.

Car Import Association are now pleading with the government to embrace public participation before passing the bill into law.
