A university student was stabbed and killed by his fellow student in a dispute over bathroom use at their hostel at the University of Nairobi’s Kikuyu Campus.
Police explained the victim identified as Brian Wambui, a third-year student, succumbed to suspected stabbing injuries at the PCEA Thogoto Hospital on Sunday August 31 following his stabbing in the abdomen.
The assailant was arrested on Tuesday after being on the run and hiding in the area, police said.
The assailant is said to be a fellow student at the university.
The two were Sunday with others watching a football match at their hostel in Kihunguro when they differed and broke into a fight.
This is after one of them went to the bathroom and found it untidy prompting an argument on who should wash it.
According to witnesses, the roommates’ dispute emerged from toilet use and cleaning.
The police said they had arrested a suspect in the murder and was expected in court for a miscellaneous application to enable them hold him pending an investigation.
Police said they had been informed that the cause of the quarrel was a disagreement over the ablution block. Police said the disagreement escalated and friends of the deceased joined in.
That is when the suspect dashed to the house to get a weapon to defend himself and stabbed Wambui in the stomach killing him.
The assailant is said to have used a kitchen knife in the mission.
He later escaped the scene as the deceased was rushed to the hospital while bleeding. He was pronounced dead while being attended to.
Police said the suspect was arrested two days later.
The body is lying at the local mortuary pending an autopsy. Police urged parties to use alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to solve their differences.
