    CS Miano, Samburu Governor grace Maralal International Camel Derby

    Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano and Samburu Governor Lati Lelelit graced the 32nd edition of the Maralal International Camel Derby in Samburu County.

    The two witnessed the epic and historic cultural event that has for many years out the Samburu community on the global map.

    The iconic three- day event brought together communities from the larger Maa and Samburu region, igniting the flourishing cultural buzz of camel keeping and it’s important and role in the region.

    “The Maralal International Camel Derby is an annual event that has been here for the last 32 years, which has put Maralal on the global map,” Lelelit said.

    He said the product markets northern Kenya as a tourism destination, and we are very proud.”

    He added that the county is keen to expand the festival’s reach this year to showcase local culture, cuisine, and artisanal crafts while boosting the region’s economic fortunes.

    Lelelit commended the national government for consistently supporting Samburu County to host the event, noting that the partnership has been instrumental in sustaining the derby’s growth.

    Miano said the event plays a significant role in showcasing Kenya’s cultural richness and an avenue to explore by both domestic and foreign tourists.

    The Maralal International Camel Derby, has significantly impacted the lives of locals in Samburu County. The derby attracts tourists, creating a lucrative market for local vendors, camel owners, and riders.

    This influx of visitors generates income for the community through sales of handicrafts, food, and lodging.

    Locals are employed as camel handlers, riders, and guides, providing a source of livelihood for many families.

    Officials said the derby is a celebration of Samburu traditions, featuring vibrant cultural performances, dances, and intricate beadwork.

    This helps preserve the community’s rich cultural heritage.

    The event also fosters unity among the nomadic communities, promoting peace and harmony in the region, the officials added.

    “The introduction of camel rearing has helped mitigate the effects of climate change in Samburu County. Camels are well adapted to the arid environment, providing a sustainable source of livelihood.”

    “The derby raises awareness about environmental conservation and promotes sustainable practices among the local communities,” said the governor.

    The Maralal International Camel Derby offers a one-of-a-kind experience, attracting adventure-seekers and cultural enthusiasts from around the world.

    The event has contributed to the development of tourism infrastructure in the region, including accommodations and guided tours

    Overall, the Samburu Camel Derby has become an integral part of the local economy, culture, and identity, providing numerous benefits for the community while promoting sustainable development and cultural preservation.
