Two men were arraigned before the Milimani Law Courts for allegedly defrauding a businesswoman of Sh15.36 million in a fake cryptocurrency investment scheme.

The two, Jackson Apollo Ananda and Alvin Oduya Atieno were accused of obtaining 116,000 USD (Sh15,360,000) from Tuyishime Grace on April 30, 2025, at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi, by falsely claiming they could help her trade on Binance, a cryptocurrency exchange platform.

The prosecution told the court that the duo, jointly with others not before the court, made the representation knowing it to be false.

Apart from the charge of obtaining money by false pretences, the two also face a second count of conspiracy to defraud contrary to Section 317 of the Penal Code.

They allegedly conspired to defraud the complainant on the same date and location by misrepresenting their ability to facilitate crypto trading.

They appealed before Magistrate Caroline Mugo.

The accused, through their lawyer, pleaded for leniency, saying they are not flight risks and are willing to abide by all bond terms imposed by the court.

The magistrate ordered that a pre-bail report be prepared before determining their release terms.

The case will be mentioned on October 9, 2025, for a bail ruling.

Meanwhile, a Maua court sentenced Alex Mugambi to 10 years in prison for attempted murder, in a ruling that underscores the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) commitment to ensuring justice and deterring violent crime.

Mugambi was found guilty of attempting to murder Joseph Mwamba on 10th of May 10 2023, in Igembe South Sub-County, Meru County, contrary to Section 220(a) of the Penal Code.

Prosecution, led by Kelvin Gitonga, presented six witnesses whose testimonies convinced the court that the accused unlawfully attempted to cause the victim’s death by attacking him with a panga, inflicting serious injuries to his neck, shoulder, and severing his right wrist.

Delivering the judgment, Senior Resident Magistrate Ken Muchiri ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, thereby convicting and sentencing the accused accordingly.
