William Steven Power, born on March 1, 1981, in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, stands as one of the most accomplished figures in open-wheel racing.

Known simply as Will Power, he is a professional race car driver whose career has been defined by precision, speed, and an unyielding competitive spirit.

Named after his great-grandfather, a motorcycle racer, Power grew up in a family steeped in motorsport passion, with his father, Bob, also pursuing racing.

Off the track, Power balances his high-octane life with family, fitness routines that include swimming, cycling, and rowing, and a passion for drumming, which he picked up at age 15.

Married to Elizabeth Cannon since 2010, the couple welcomed their son, Beau William Power, in December 2016.

    Siblings

Will has three brothers, Ken Power, Damien Power, and Nick Power.

Raised in Toowoomba, the brothers were immersed in an environment where racing was a family affair, though each carved out distinct paths.

Damien Power, in particular, stands out as a successful stand-up comedian in Australia, often weaving humorous anecdotes about Will’s racing triumphs into his routines, adding a lighthearted layer to their sibling bond.

    Career

Power’s professional racing odyssey began in the karting circuits of his native Australia, where his natural talent quickly shone through, earning him national recognition by his early teens.

Transitioning to single-seater formulas, he competed in British and European series like Formula Ford and Formula Vauxhall, honing skills that would define his career.

His breakthrough in North America came in 2005 with a stint in the Champ Car World Series, driving for Team Australia, where he notched podium finishes and caught the eye of top teams.

The 2008 season marked a pivotal shift as Champ Car merged with the IndyCar Series; Power claimed victory in the final Champ Car race at Long Beach, securing his first IndyCar win in the process.

Joining Team Penske full-time in 2010, he unleashed a dominant run, winning the season’s opening races in São Paulo and St. Petersburg and establishing himself as a qualifying maestro.

Over the next decade, Power’s tenure with Penske yielded consistent excellence, blending road course mastery with oval prowess.

In 2024, he added three more victories to his tally, pushing his career wins to 44.

As of 2025, Power embarks on his 17th season with the team, piloting the No. 12 Verizon Business Chevrolet, his qualifying records alone securing his place among racing immortals.

Beyond IndyCar, he has dabbled in endurance events, including the Rolex 24 at Daytona, showcasing versatility that transcends series boundaries.

    Accolades

Power’s trophy cabinet gleams with achievements that place him among IndyCar’s elite, beginning with his 2014 series championship, where he clinched the title with a blend of five wins and unwavering consistency.

This triumph repeated in spectacular fashion in 2022, marking him as a two-time NTT IndyCar Series champion and affirming his status as a generational talent.

His crowning jewel arrived in 2018 at the Indianapolis 500, where he led the final 15 laps to victory in the 102nd running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, etching his name into motorsport lore.

Power’s qualifying dominance is unparalleled; with 71 pole positions as of 2025, he shattered Mario Andretti’s long-standing record in 2022, holding the all-time mark and earning the moniker “King of Qualifying.”

His 45 career wins rank him fourth on IndyCar’s historical list, complemented by 105 podiums that underscore his reliability in a fiercely competitive field.

Additional honors include the 2010 and 2011 Mario Andretti Road Course Championships, reflecting his supremacy on twisting layouts.
