Police are investigating the sudden death of the head of state broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Corporation’s Mayienga Radio Festus Amimo.

Amimo died suddenly in a room at a hotel near Central Police Station he was in on Saturday night in Nairobi.

His body was taken to the City Mortuary Sunday dawn after the sudden death, officials said.

The cause of the death is under probe. He is said to have collapsed and died in his room.

Amimo was also the chair of the Luo Journalists Association.

Amimo passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in community broadcasting and cultural preservation.

News of his death spread quickly across social platforms and newsrooms, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues, listeners, and leaders who had worked closely with him.

Many remembered Amimo not only for his professional excellence but also for the warmth, generosity, and grounded presence he brought into every space he occupied.

Colleagues from the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation described Amimo as a consistent, principled editor who believed radio should reflect the realities, challenges, and aspirations of the communities it serves.

Many credited him with nurturing young journalists, guiding them through the early stages of their careers, and insisting on high standards of accuracy and cultural sensitivity.

In 2022, he had indicated plans to vie for the Nyando parliamentary seat, though he remained a journalist until his passing.

A number of local leaders mourned his death.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo said Amimo was a warm soul, a steady presence and a true friend whose kindness and humility touched everyone around him.

Until his passing, he served with great dedication as the Head of KBC Dholuo – Mayienga Radio and Chair of the Luo Journalists Association, where his leadership and passion for storytelling shaped countless voices and strengthened the profession, said Omollo.

KBC Managing Director Agnes Kalekye said Amimo was a hardworking, dedicated breakfast presenter and head of Mayienga.

“He had exceptional leadership skills that had propelled Mayienga FM to a powerful Luo station. He was passionate about radio,” she said.

“We have indeed lost a great journalist. It is heartbreaking to imagine that we will not see him again and share in his wisdom.”
She added Amimo was more than a leader, he was a gentleman, a star, and a friend to the listeners and team.

“His warmth, dedication, and unwavering spirit touched countless lives and shaped the very heart of our station.”
Siaya Governor James Orengo also mourned the death saying the death was a blow to many.

“Your sessions on air were exceptional, marked by grace, depth, and unwavering respect for every guest who sat across from you. Shine on your path, my good friend, Wuod Awasi. Your voice and spirit will be dearly missed.”
