Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen commended the residents of Tiaty Constituency for leading the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms.
The CS said the effort has played a pivotal role in restoring peace and stability in the region.
Speaking in Kolowa, Tiaty Constituency, during a women empowerment event on Wednesday December 10, 2025, the CS expressed satisfaction with the newfound peace, noting that it has enabled local communities to go about their business unperturbed.
“We agreed that all those in possession of illegal firearms should surrender them. I commend the residents of Tiaty and the neighbouring areas who have complied. I am very pleased with this positive step,” he said.
He said the local communities were now living in peace and coexisting with their neighbours.
He noted that the Government is now rolling out strategic development initiatives to open up opportunities and spur economic growth in Tiaty and the wider Kerio Valley region.
He was joined by Baringo Senator Vincent Chemitei, host MP William Kamket and his Taveta counterpart John Bwire among other leaders.
The area is among those that had for years been facing insecurity. This led to many deaths and displacements.
Murkomen reported notable progress in the ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu (OMU) across Kerio Valley, Samburu, Laikipia, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, and parts of Meru, where peace has returned, trading centres have reopened, and schools have resumed normal operations.
He further stated that the Government’s long-term objective is to ensure every Kenyan, regardless of location, enjoys the same sense of safety and access to services.
“Lasting peace comes when security and development move together. Our investment in infrastructure is not just about security – it is about restoring dignity and opportunity to communities that have long been isolated,” he said.
