Property linked to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi were destroyed for lying next to the railway line at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi.

The property included at least 15 cars that were damaged, a two-storey temporary structure, a car wash and carpet washing machine and assorted electronic goods, witnesses said

Officials said the property had been lying on the Kenya Railways land and Wamatangi had refused to vacate when asked to.

According to police, Wednesday was the second time the officials were attempting to evict the investor from the scene. Last week, the team carrying out the exercise was stoned and chased out of the site by a group that had prior information on the same.

On Wednesday dawn, the police clashed with a group who tried to resist the eviction.

The police had to use teargas canisters to disperse the group who had lit bonfires on the Aerodrome Road.

Police blocked the now Douglas Wakihuri Road behind Nyayo Stadium to enable the exercise to go on as planned.

This enabled the bulldozers to move to the scene and demolish the property.

The demonstrators were chased from the scene by the police.

Traffic flow on the road was diverted as the exercise went on smoothly. Some spectators watched in disbelief as the bulldozers demolished the property.

Officials said there are plans to expand the railway line to Talanta Stadium hence the move.

Nairobi police boss George Seda said they went in to help the Kenya Railways repossess the site.

He added they will arrest anyone who will try to block the police work.

He said no injuries were reported but property were destroyed. A crowd stood a distance away ready to pounce on the demolished property which included brand new cars.

There was no immediate comment from the politician linked to the property.

But his handlers said the demolition was politically motivated aimed at grounding him.

“They started by demolishing an ECDE in Mangu Ward, Gatundu North, Kiambu. Now, they are demolishing Governor Wamatangi’s private businesses at night,” said a close aide to the politician.
