The Government is keen to ensure that the ongoing construction of the 740-km Isiolo-Mandera road is completed on schedule, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said.

He said the Regional Road Corridor, being implemented under the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project, will open up northern Kenya, enhance regional trade, strengthen connectivity, and improve security.

He spoke when he met fellow CSs Davis Chirchir (Roads and Transport) and Soipan Tuya (Defence) during a high-level multi-agency consultation to review the security arrangements in place to ensure that construction across all sections of the over 740-kilometre corridor proceeds concurrently and without disruption.

“We wish to reassure our development partners and contractors that security measures on the ground have been significantly bolstered and that adequate resources have been deployed to guarantee the safety of personnel and equipment along the entire corridor,” Murkomen said.

He said the Ministry will continue engaging leaders from the region and undertake field visits to ascertain that all requisite security protocols are fully in place and effectively implemented.

Tuya noted that strong inter-agency coordination and sustained security support are critical to the successful implementation of the project.

“Contractors can now resume work. The prevailing security situation is stable and well managed. We assure contractors of continued government support and protection as project implementation progresses,” Chirchir said.

Present were PSs Dr. Raymond Omollo (Internal Security and National Administration), Dr. Patrick Mariru (Defence), and Eng. Joseph Mbugua (Roads), DIG-APS Gilbert Masengeli, Principal Administrative Secretary for Internal Security Jacob Narengo, and the General Officer Commanding Eastern Command, Major General Luka Kutto, among other officials.
