Ian von Memerty, a South African television personality who documented his plans to take his own life, has died aged 61.

The star, who was previously a judge on South Africa’s Got Talent and hosted the country’s version of Strictly Come Dancing, passed away a week ago, his family said.

Their statement did not say how Von Memerty had died, but said: “As a family we have done everything we can to love & respect him on his journey.”

In a months-long series of Facebook posts, Von Memerty had spoken candidly about choosing to end his life. He said he did not want to experience the physical and cognitive effects of aging, become poor or be financially dependent on his family.

Von Memerty’s family announced the TV star’s death on his Facebook page, revealing he had passed away in Johannesburg during the early hours of last Monday.

“We ask for privacy & respect as we deal with our own pain, having lost someone we’ve loved very much,” the post continued.

Some social media users believed Von Memerty had a right to decide when to die, while others criticised him for detailing his plans on a public platform.

Some accused him of being “selfish” and questioned how his family would be affected.

In a tearful video posted as part of his series, Von Memerty said the day he told his family of his plans was “one of the worst days” of his life.

Along with his roles on Strictly Come Dancing and South Africa’s Got Talent, Von Memerty acted in and directed several theatre shows.

In the latter part of his career, he performed on cruise ships and worked as a pet sitter.

Von Memerty was born in Zimbabwe, but spent a large portion of his life in South Africa.
