Police in Samburu County launched investigations after unknown suspects stole Sh400,000 from a vehicle parked in Maralal Town on Thursday, March 12, 2026, afternoon.

The complainant told police that he had withdrawn Sh500,000 over the counter at KCB Bank Maralal Branch before heading to Super SACCO to deposit part of the money.

He reportedly left Sh400,000 hidden in a compartment behind the driver’s seat of his Toyota Land Cruiser after locking the vehicle and proceeded into the SACCO to deposit Sh100,000.

However, when he returned to his vehicle moments later, he discovered that the co-driver’s door lock had been tampered with and the Sh400,000 was missing.

Police believe the gang was in bank or had prior information on the transactions.

A review of CCTV footage at Super SACCO revealed that the victim had been trailed from the bank by occupants of a grey saloon car whose registration number was not clearly captured.

Investigators established that a medium-built man followed the victim into the SACCO premises to monitor his movements while another suspect broke into the vehicle and stole the cash.

Police said one of the suspects’ faces was clearly captured on CCTV footage and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the suspects as well as trace the vehicle used in the crime.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant when handling large sums of money and to report any suspicious activity to security agencies.

Elsewhere police in Kiambu County launched investigations after a businessman was abducted, assaulted and robbed by a gang posing as passengers in a private vehicle.

The incident occurred on March 12, 2026 at around 3:10 p.m. along Mombasa Road.

The victim, who is, a chicken trader operating at Kitengela East Mart area in Kitengela, said he had boarded a white Toyota Fielder heading toward Sultan Hamud after agreeing to pay Sh300 as fare.

He told police that the vehicle already had three male passengers and one female on board. Shortly after joining Mombasa Road and traveling about three kilometres, the passengers turned on him.

The gang, reportedly armed with a pistol, handcuffed and blindfolded him before assaulting him. He sustained visible injuries on the head, throat, shoulder and face during the attack.

The suspects robbed him of Sh177 that he had hidden in his socks and transferred Sh50,000 from his M-Pesa account.

They also forced him to surrender his ATM cards for both KCB Bank and National Bank of Kenya after demanding the PIN numbers.

Police said the attackers further used the victim’s phone to threaten his wife, demanding Sh200,000 ransom. The family managed to send Sh15,000 before communication was cut off.

The gang later dumped the victim at Kamahindu Forest at around 9:30 p.m.

He managed to stop a passing public service vehicle and travelled to Githunguri Town where he reported the matter to police.

The victim was later assisted by a good Samaritan, Virginia Nyambura, to seek treatment at Githunguri Health Centre where he was treated and reported to be in stable condition.

Police have since informed the victim’s family and officers in Kitengela as investigations into the incident continue. Authorities are pursuing leads to identify and arrest the suspects involved in the attack.
