Three people, including two children, died early Monday morning after a fire broke out in a one-room house following a domestic dispute in Huruma, Nairobi.
According to police from Huruma Police Station, the incident was reported at around 12:03am by a resident from the Mbuthia area.
Police who rushed to the scene established that a man had entered the house, locked the door from inside and started fighting with his wife.
The wife screamed for help, attracting the attention of neighbours who quickly gathered outside the house.
When the man realized that angry residents were about to break into the house, he allegedly opened a gas cylinder and struck a match, igniting a fire that rapidly spread inside the room.
Members of the public eventually managed to contain the blaze.
However, two children aged about two and five years and a 26-year-old woman died from suspected gas inhalation and burn injuries.
The husband and wife sustained serious burn injuries and were initially rushed to MSF Hospital before being referred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment.
Police said the bodies of the victims were moved to Nairobi City Mortuary awaiting post-mortem examinations.
Police have launched investigations into the incident.
Meanwhile, a 36-year-old mine manager has died after drowning inside a deep gold mine shaft in Kehancha Township, Kuria West Sub-county, Migori County.
According to police at Kehancha Police Station, the incident was reported on Sunday evening following a drowning inside a mine located at the Kaa na Watu area in Kehancha.
Police officers together with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Kuria West visited the scene after receiving the report from the owner of the mine.
Preliminary investigations established that the mine, which is operated by Pius Magaigwa Mwita, had accumulated a large amount of water inside the shaft.
At around 2:00pm, the mine manager, Ali Elias Mwita, descended into the mine — estimated to be about 80 metres deep — to retrieve a motor pump used to drain water from the shaft.
However, when he attempted to climb back up, other workers reportedly could not see him due to the large volume of water that had filled the mine.
The workers later used water pumps to drain the shaft and eventually discovered that Mwita had drowned.
Police processed the scene and the body of the deceased was retrieved from the mine.
The remains were moved to Kehancha Sub County Hospital Mortuary where they are awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have launched investigations into the incident as concerns persist over safety conditions in artisanal mining operations in the region.
