A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 45 years in prison after pleading guilty to the brutal murder of his younger brother and nephew in Kisumu County.
The sentence was secured by the prosecution following a conviction at the High Court in Kisumu.
The accused, Arnold Ochieng Omollo, admitted to two counts of murder, acknowledging responsibility for the deaths of the two minors.
The court heard that the killings occurred between November 25 and 26, 2024, at Kamango Village in Nyakach Sub-county. The victims—both aged under 10—were attacked while asleep in what the court described as a premeditated and particularly brutal act.
Investigations revealed that crude weapons, including a metallic hoe and a wooden handle, were used in the killings.
A postmortem examination established that both children died from severe head injuries caused by penetrating trauma to the brain.
Prosecutor Mercy Muema told the court that the victims were vulnerable and incapable of defending themselves, stressing that the accused had a duty of care toward them.
She further noted that there was no evidence of provocation and that the accused showed no remorse after the incident, urging the court to impose a deterrent sentence.
In his ruling, Joe M. Omido sentenced Omollo to 45 years’ imprisonment on each count, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The term will be calculated from December 18, 2024, when the accused was first arraigned in court.
Justice Omido emphasized the gravity of the offence, stating that the punishment reflects the sanctity of life and the need to protect minors, particularly those under the care of guardians.
He added that the sentence should serve as a warning against similar crimes in society.
The court also cited strong prosecution evidence, including exhibits recovered from the crime scene, as key in securing the conviction.
