Police in Murang’a County are investigating a robbery with violence incident at a supermarket in Gatanga Sub-County.

Detectives said the incident occurred on March 17, 2026, at around 10:53 pm at Ted Mat Supermarket in Delview area, Samuru Location, Mugumoini Ward.

Preliminary investigations indicate that two men entered the supermarket at around 9:00 pm, pretending to be regular customers as the business was preparing to close.

Once inside, they reportedly drew a pistol and ordered everyone present to lie down.

The suspects then robbed a staff member of her mobile phone—a Realme smartphone—and an unspecified amount of cash before fleeing the scene.

Police officers visited the scene and began investigations. No injuries were reported during the incident.

Elsewhere, police in Nyeri County disarmed a businessman following an alleged assault and death threat involving a licensed firearm at a petrol station in Karatina town.

The security guard attached to the petrol station and Mathira Sports Club, told police he was confronted by the premises’ proprietor while on duty.

He alleged that the firearm holder ordered him to vacate his workstation immediately without explanation.

When he declined to leave before being formally relieved, a confrontation ensued during which the businessman allegedly assaulted him using blows, causing head injuries.

The situation escalated when the suspect reportedly drew a firearm and threatened to kill the guard.

Police visited the scene and established that the suspect is a licensed firearm holder.

He was subsequently disarmed, and his Ceska pistol—loaded with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition—was confiscated and placed in the police armoury pending investigations. Authorities confirmed that no shots were fired during the incident.

The injured guard was advised to seek medical attention as investigations into the matter continue. Cases where licensed gun holders misuse their weapons have been on the rise amid efforts to address the trend.

There are about 15,000 licensed gun holders in the country who go through a rigorous process before getting a permit to own the weapons.
