Two young children died following a devastating landslide in Kikoko Location, Kilungu Sub-County, Makueni County, as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc across parts of the country.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, March 23, 2026, struck a family home in Kitende Village, Kalongo Sub-location, while the occupants were asleep.
According to local authorities, the landslide hit the rear section of a six-room house at around 3:00 a.m., causing one of the rooms to collapse.
The two victims—aged 8 and 3—were trapped inside the collapsed room and died on the spot.
The children were both pupils at Kikoko Comprehensive School, where they were enrolled in Grade Two and PP1 respectively.
Police visited the scene and confirmed the deaths. The bodies of the minors were found in the sitting room, where they had been moved after the incident.
Preliminary observations indicated no visible external injuries on the victims.
Four other family members narrowly escaped the tragedy with minor injuries.
In a related incident within the same location, another landslide struck a home belonging to Bridget Stephen in Kathangathini Village. The house collapsed, but all occupants escaped unharmed.
Authorities have cautioned residents in landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant as persistent rains continue to loosen soil and increase the risk of similar disasters.
Elsewhere, a two-year-old girl died after drowning in a canal in Tana Delta Sub-County, Tana River County, in a tragic incident linked to ongoing heavy rains in the region.
The child drowned on March 22, 2026, at Bubesa “A” Village, located about 38 kilometres north of Gamba Police Station.
According to police the minor had been playing with another child near the banks of the TARDA canal, approximately 300 metres from their home, when the incident occurred.
Her mother, Rukia Rahama, who was inside the house at the time, later noticed the children were missing and began searching for them. Her search led her to the canal, where she found the other child.
Upon inquiry, the child informed her that the child had slipped into the canal while they were playing.
The mother raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to respond and begin a search operation. Despite the strong currents caused by ongoing heavy rains, the child’s body was eventually retrieved at around 7:00 p.m. the same day.
Authorities have indicated that no foul play is suspected.
The body was moved to Malindi Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it awaits postmortem examination.
Residents have been urged to exercise caution and closely supervise children, especially near water bodies, as heavy rains continue to raise water levels and increase the risk of drowning.
Rains have killed more than 90 people in the last month amid warnings they will continue to pour.
Many others have been displaced in the chaos.
