A donkey was electrocuted while scratching its body against an electric pole support wire in Lamu Town.

The incident happened on March 24 at about 10 am, police and Kenya Power and Lighting officials said.

Police visited the scene and established the animal was scratching itself on an electric pole support wire when it was electrocuted. It died on the spot.

KPLC officials also visited the scene and helped police in processing the same.

The carcass was disposed off. Witnesses said the incident attracted a crowd there before the scene was cleared.

Electrocution cases have been on the rise both in rural and urban areas with officials linking the same to use of quacks in wiring and illegal power connections.

Elsewhere in Kathiani, Machakos County, a 14-year-old boy drowned in a dam in a tragic incident.

The boy had been missing for hours before his body was discovered in Ndulilya Dam.

The circumstances surrounding the incident were not clear, police said as they moved the body to the mortuary pending an autopsy and probe.

And nine people were Tuesday night killed in separate road accidents in the country.

Police said the victims included five pedestrians, three riders and a passenger.

The accidents left 22 people with serious injuries and they included 11 passengers, five riders, three pillion passengers, two pedestrians and driver. The victims are nursing wounds in hospitals pending investigations into the accidents, police said.

Fatal accidents have been on the rise with more than 1,000 so far killed in the past three months alone, which officials termed as alarming.

Police say most of the accidents are caused by human error and have been running campaigns to address the same.

The accidents leave most families with huge dent as the bills surge to attend to the injured.
