Two people were injured after armed robbers opened fire during a night attack at an MPesa shop in Ondisore Market, Gem Wagai sub-county, within Siaya County.

Police said the incident occurred at around 9:00 p.m. on Thursday when five armed assailants riding on two motorcycles, with concealed number plates, stormed the premises and shot two victims before fleeing.

Police officers who responded to the scene rushed the injured to St. David Community Health Centre before they were referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital for further treatment.

Investigations indicate the attackers struck during a widespread power blackout in the area, which may have facilitated the operation.

One of the victims sustained a gunshot wound to the left shoulder. The second victim, suffered a gunshot injury to the left thigh. Both are reported to be in stable condition.

Crime scene investigators processed the area and recovered two spent cartridges, which are expected to aid in ongoing investigations.

Authorities said it was not immediately clear whether any money or valuables were stolen during the attack, as inquiries continue into the motive and identity of the assailants.

The area has been experiencing a surge in crime amid efforts to address the trend.

More detectives have been sent to the area to track the suspects behind the incidents, police said on Friday.

Meanwhile, a 42-year-old casual labourer died after sustaining severe head injuries when a building pillar collapsed on him during a demolition exercise in Kiminini sub-county, Trans Nzoia County.

Police said the incident occurred on March 20, 2026, at around 4:00 p.m., but was only reported to police on March 26 by the deceased’s wife.

The deceased, identified as David Okutoi, was working as a casual labourer when one of the pillars being demolished suddenly collapsed, striking him on the head and leaving him with critical injuries.

He was rescued and rushed to Kijana Wamalwa Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was admitted for five days while undergoing treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on the morning of March 25.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
