Steven Matz is a professional baseball pitcher who has competed in Major League Baseball for over a decade.
Born on May 29, 1991, in Stony Brook, New York, he grew up on Long Island and developed a passion for the game at an early age.
Matz was drafted by the New York Mets in the second round of the 2009 MLB Draft out of Ward Melville High School.
He eventually made his major league debut with the Mets in 2015 and has since pitched for several teams, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, and Tampa Bay Rays.
Known for his left-handed delivery and competitive spirit, Matz has carved out a solid career as a starting pitcher while overcoming various injuries along the way.
He married singer Taylor Cain in 2017, and the couple has started a family together.

His father, Ron Matz, coached a travel baseball team and worked as a service manager at a Jeep dealership, which helped foster Steven’s early interest in the sport.
His mother, Lori Matz, worked as an administrative employee at Comsewogue High School.
Jonathan, the eldest sibling, pursued artistic and design interests rather than continuing in competitive baseball; he has studied graphic design and worked in landscape architecture.

Career
Matz’s professional journey began when the New York Mets selected him in the 2009 draft.
He progressed through the Mets’ minor league system, earning recognition as the organization’s Pitcher of the Year in 2014 after strong performances at multiple levels.
His major league debut came on June 28, 2015, against the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field, where he delivered a memorable performance by hitting a home run and driving in runs while pitching effectively.
That rookie season culminated in a postseason appearance, including a start in the World Series against the Kansas City Royals.
Over the following years with the Mets, Matz dealt with injuries, including elbow and shoulder issues that required Tommy John surgery and other recoveries, but he continued to contribute as a reliable starter when healthy.
He became a free agent after the 2021 season and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he spent several years before moving to the Toronto Blue Jays and later the Tampa Bay Rays.
Throughout his career, Matz has been valued for his ability to induce ground balls and compete in high-pressure situations, though durability has occasionally been a challenge.
He has also been involved in community efforts, such as supporting charitable causes alongside his wife.
Accolades
In the minors, Matz was named a Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star and earned spots on Baseball America Double-A All-Star teams.
With the Mets, he was honored as the organization’s Pitcher of the Year in 2014.
His standout major league moment came in his debut game, where he set records for hitting production by a pitcher in his first start.
Matz has also been part of postseason teams, including the 2015 Mets squad that reached the World Series.
