    Kenyan Fiction Writer, Makena Onjerika Wins Caine Prize For African Writing

    Kenyan writer, Makena Onjerika has won the 2018 Caine Prize for African writing for her short story titled “Fanta Blackcurrant.”

    Ms Makena was among the 5 shortlisted finalists who include Nonyelum Ekwempu (Nigeria), Wole Talabi (Nigeria), Olufunke Ogundimu (Nigeria) and Stacy Hardy (South Africa).

    Her story was announced as the winner on Monday evening by the chairman of the panel of judges, Dinaw Mengestu.

    Her story was first published by Wasafiri, a UK literally Magazine, in 2017. She has also been previously published at Urban Confusions.

    Ms Makena is a fiction writer and is also a graduate of the MFA Creative Writing programme at New York University.

    Her title prize comes with a cash award of Sh.1.3 Million. The other shortlisted nominees also walk away with about Sh.60,000 cash prize.
