    Siblings

Charlie grew up in a close-knit family in Long Beach, New York, as the only son among three sisters.

His older sister is Kayla McAvoy, who has carved out her own path in professional hockey as an assistant sports scientist and strength and conditioning coach with the New York Rangers organization.

Kayla’s role has created memorable sibling moments on NHL ice, including pregame fist bumps and lighthearted rivalries when the Bruins face the Rangers.

His younger twin sisters, Heather and Holly McAvoy, born around 2003, round out the family.

    Career

McAvoy’s passion for hockey began early, skating at age three at the Long Beach Arena, where his father helped install a studio rink.

Raised by parents Charlie McAvoy Sr., a fourth-generation plumbing and heating contractor, and Jennifer McAvoy, an elementary school teacher, he learned the value of hard work and dedication from a young age.

After one year at Long Beach High School, he moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to join the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, where he excelled as a top-scoring defenseman on the U17 and U18 teams, winning gold at the 2015 IIHF Under-18 World Championship.

He then committed to Boston University, enjoying a standout college career that included Hockey East All-Rookie honors as a freshman and First Team All-Star recognition as a sophomore.

Selected by the Boston Bruins in the first round, 14th overall, of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, McAvoy made his NHL debut in 2017 and quickly established himself.

Over his career, he has logged hundreds of games as a top-pairing defenseman, contributing steady offense from the back end while anchoring the Bruins’ blue line.

He has participated in deep playoff runs, including multiple appearances in the postseason, and has been praised for his ability to log heavy minutes against top opponents.

Off the ice, McAvoy married Kiley Sullivan in 2023 and became a father in 2025, while maintaining close ties to his Long Island roots and family.

    Accolades

In college at Boston University, McAvoy was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team in 2016, the Hockey East First All-Star Team and AHCA East First-Team All-American in 2017.

Upon entering the NHL, he was selected to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2018.

He has since been named to the NHL Second All-Star Team in 2022 and has received the Eddie Shore Award as the Bruins’ top defenseman on multiple occasions, including in 2022 and 2026.

McAvoy has also been nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for his perseverance and dedication.

Internationally, he helped the United States capture gold at the IIHF World U18 Championship and has represented Team USA at senior levels, including the World Championships where he contributed to a bronze medal, as well as Olympic participation.

He ranks among the Boston Bruins’ all-time leaders among defensemen in several statistical categories and was named one of the Top 100 Best Bruins Players of All Time in 2024.
