Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is a standout Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender currently serving as a primary starter for the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League.

Born on March 9, 1999, in Espoo, Finland, he is often referred to by his initials “UPL” or the nickname “6K.”

Luukkonen uses his massive frame and athletic reflexes to cover a significant portion of the net, playing a modern butterfly style that emphasizes positioning and reach.

Selected by the Sabres in the second round of the 2017 NHL Draft, he has navigated a steady developmental path to become the franchise’s most promising solution in goal since the era of Ryan Miller.

    Siblings

Ukko-Pekka has a twin brother, Jaakko, who shared his early love for sports, specifically football, before choosing a career path outside of professional athletics to become an engineer.

His older brother, Nuutti Luukkonen, also shared a passion for hockey and played as a goaltender at the junior level in Finland.

While Nuutti eventually transitioned away from the crease to pursue a career as a pilot, his experience in the position provided a supportive and competitive environment for Ukko-Pekka during his formative years.

    Career

After a stellar start in the Finnish junior leagues with HPK, Luukkonen moved to North America to play for the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League.

His single season in the OHL was historic, as he led the league in save percentage and shutouts, becoming the first European player to win the Red Tilson Trophy as the league’s Most Outstanding Player.

He transitioned to the professional ranks within the Sabres organization in 2019, spending time with the Cincinnati Cyclones in the ECHL and the Rochester Americans in the AHL.

He made his highly anticipated NHL debut on April 23, 2021, securing a victory against the Boston Bruins and immediately signaling his readiness for the highest level of competition.

Following a period of splitting time between Rochester and Buffalo, Luukkonen fully established himself as an NHL regular during the 2023-2024 season.

During that campaign, he recorded 27 wins and five shutouts, the most by a Sabres goaltender in over a decade.

His performance earned him a significant four-year contract extension in the summer of 2024.

Despite a challenging 2024-2025 season where the team struggled defensively, Luukkonen rebounded spectacularly in the 2025-2026 season.

Under the veteran coaching of Lindy Ruff, he helped lead Buffalo to an Atlantic Division title, posting 22 wins and a 2.52 goals-against average during the regular season.

    Accolades

Luukkonen is a gold medalist at both the IIHF World U18 Championship (2016) and the IIHF World Junior Championship (2019), where he was also named to the tournament’s All-Star Team.

In the OHL, his 2018-2019 season remains legendary, as he took home the Goaltender of the Year award and the Red Tilson Trophy.

At the professional level, he was an ECHL All-Star in 2020 and was named the NHL Rookie of the Month in January 2023.

Most recently, in 2025, he was honored with a selection to Team Finland’s roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off, confirming his status as one of the top Finnish goaltenders currently active in the world.
