Luke Schenn is a veteran Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman currently bringing a physical, shutdown presence to the Buffalo Sabres.
Born on November 2, 1989, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, he was a highly touted prospect known for his size and defensive reliability.
Schenn earned the nickname “The Human Eraser” during his junior career for his ability to neutralize opposing forwards with heavy hits and a strong net-front presence.
Over a career spanning nearly two decades, he has transitioned from a top-pairing prospect to a respected veteran leader and two-time Stanley Cup champion.
Siblings
The Schenn family is well-known in the hockey world, primarily due to the success of Luke and his younger brother, Brayden Schenn.
Brayden, a star forward and former captain of the St. Louis Blues, followed closely in Luke’s footsteps, being drafted fifth overall in the 2009 NHL Draft.
The brothers achieved a rare and historic milestone during the 2024-2025 season when they became the first pair of brothers in NHL history to each skate in their 1,000th career game during the same season.
While they have spent most of their careers as opponents, they memorably played together for the Philadelphia Flyers between 2012 and 2016.
Career
Schenn’s professional journey began with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who selected him fifth overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft directly from the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL.
He made an immediate jump to the NHL as an 18-year-old, earning a spot on the All-Rookie Team.

After four seasons in Toronto, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in a high-profile deal for James van Riemsdyk.
His career later saw him move through several organizations, including the Los Angeles Kings and Arizona Coyotes, before he revitalized his trajectory with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In Tampa, Schenn accepted a specialized depth role, providing the grit and physical protection necessary for the team to secure back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.
Following his success in Tampa Bay, Schenn enjoyed a productive stint with the Vancouver Canucks, where he set a league record for the most hits by a defenseman in a single season.
His career came full circle in 2023 when he was traded back to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a playoff run before signing a multi-year deal with the Nashville Predators.
The 2024-2025 season was particularly eventful for the veteran; after reaching his 1,000th game milestone in October 2024, he was traded twice in a single week—moving from Nashville to the Pittsburgh Penguins and then quickly to the Winnipeg Jets.
In March 2026, the Buffalo Sabres acquired Schenn to bolster their blue line for a late-season push.
Now at 36 years old, Schenn remains one of the league’s most feared physical players, reaching his 1,100th career game in January 2026.
Despite his veteran status, he continues to lead his teams in hits and blocked shots per 60 minutes, currently serving as a vital mentor for Buffalo’s young core of defensemen.
Accolades
Schenn’s trophy case is highlighted by two Stanley Cup championships, won consecutively with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.
His early impact on the league was recognized with a selection to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2009.
On the international stage, he has been a frequent representative for Canada, winning a gold medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships and appearing in several IIHF World Championships.
During his junior career in the WHL, he was named a Second-Team All-Star and was recognized as the Kelowna Rockets’ MVP.
Most recently, his longevity has been celebrated as he joined the prestigious 1,000-game club, cementing his legacy as one of the most durable and consistent physical defensemen of his generation.
