Police in Magarini Sub-County, Kilifi County, are investigating a tragic fire incident in which two children died after a house was reduced to ashes in Mapotea Village.

The incident reported on Thursday, April 23, involved a house belonging to a 70-year-old woman.

According to preliminary reports, the woman is said to have placed a sack of charcoal inside the house at around 7:00 p.m. before leaving at about 9:00 p.m.

She reportedly returned at around 3:00 a.m. and found her house completely burnt down. Police officers visited the scene and confirmed the house had been destroyed by fire.

Two bodies were recovered from the debris. The victims were identified as a 9-year-old Grade 3 pupil at Karimboni Comprehensive School, and his sister, a 7-year-old Grade 2 pupil at the same school.

The bodies were moved to Malindi Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where postmortem examinations are expected to be conducted.

The scene was documented and photographed as investigations continue to establish the cause of the fire.

Dzendere Karisa Charo has been taken in by detectives from Magarini for statement recording.

Meanwhile, a family in Kwanza Sub-County, Trans Nzoia County, is mourning the tragic death of their one-year-five-month-old child who drowned in an open borehole on Thursday.

The incident occurred at Sabwani “B” Village in Bidii Location, police said.

The deceased is said to have gone missing from home at around 9:30 a.m., prompting his parents and neighbours to begin a search.

According to his parents, the child had been in good condition before he disappeared.

The search ended in tragedy when his body was discovered in a nearby open borehole belonging to a neighbour, approximately seven metres from their house.

Police officers from Maili Saba Police Station, alongside detectives and Scenes of Crime personnel from Kitale, visited and processed the scene. No visible injuries were noted on the body.

The body was moved to Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.

Authorities have urged residents to ensure that boreholes and other water points are properly secured to prevent similar incidents.
