    Siblings

Nikolaj grew up alongside his older brother Sebastian and his younger sister Caroline.

Sebastian Ehlers also pursued a career in ice hockey and has played professionally, including stints with teams like the Odense Bulldogs in Denmark’s top league.

The brothers share a close bond rooted in their shared passion for the sport, though their paths diverged as Nikolaj advanced to the NHL while Sebastian continued his career in Europe.

Caroline, the youngest sibling, has been a supportive presence in Nikolaj’s life.

    Career

Ehlers began his hockey journey in Switzerland, where his father coached.

He made his National League A debut at age 16 with EHC Biel and even played alongside NHL stars during the 2012-13 lockout.

In 2013, he moved to North America to join the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

His rookie season was outstanding: he recorded 104 points in 63 games, leading all rookies and finishing fourth overall in league scoring.

Selected ninth overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 2014, Ehlers returned for one more junior season, posting 101 points in 51 games and helping Halifax in the playoffs.

He made his NHL debut in the 2015-16 season at age 19 and quickly adapted, recording 38 points as a rookie, including his first hat trick.

Over the next decade with the Jets, he became a key offensive contributor, consistently posting strong goal and point totals while showcasing his elite speed.

Ehlers reached career milestones with Winnipeg, including breaking the record for most points by a Denmark-born player in NHL history.

In July 2025, he signed a six-year, $51 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, bringing his speed and skill to a strong Eastern Conference contender.

He has also represented Denmark internationally at World Championships and the Olympics.

    Accolades

In the QMJHL, Ehlers won the RDS Cup as Rookie of the Year, the Michael Bossy Trophy as the league’s top prospect, and the Paul Dumont Trophy as the “Personality of the Year.”

He was also named to the QMJHL First and Second All-Star Teams and earned Canadian Major Junior Rookie of the Year honors.

In the NHL, he has been a consistent performer, with multiple seasons of 60+ points and notable playoff contributions.
