Police in Kehancha are investigating a fatal shooting incident in the Namba area of Kuria West after an unidentified man was shot dead by unknown assailants on Monday night.
Police said they responded to reports of gunfire in the area and upon visiting the scene, officers recovered five spent 9mm cartridges, confirming that a shooting had occurred.

Police said efforts to identify the deceased were unsuccessful after a group of armed and hostile residents allegedly turned violent and blocked officers from accessing the body, which had been locked inside a house.

During the confrontation, one unidentified person allegedly attempted to stab the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kehancha Police Station, prompting officers to fire three rounds of 5.56mm ammunition into the air to disperse the crowd.

The officers later retreated to the station as tensions escalated.
Authorities said the body remained at the scene for hours, with additional efforts being made to access it. The police managed to move the body to the mortuary.

The motive behind the killing has not yet been established.

The area has been experiencing a surge in violent crime amid efforts to solve the incidents.

Elsewhere, police in Khwisero launched investigations following a shooting and robbery with violence incident targeting a shopkeeper and M-Pesa agent in Irumbi ‘A’ village.

According to locals, police officers responded to the scene in Muhaka sub-location, Kisa West location, after receiving reports of a violent robbery on Monday night.

Preliminary investigations established that at around 8.30pm, two masked men approached the victim’s shop as he was taking display merchandise inside at closing time.

Police said the attackers accosted the victim and, when he attempted to resist, one of the suspects — who was armed with a rifle — shot him near the left collar bone.

The assailants reportedly accessed a safe box inside the premises and stole an unknown amount of cash believed to be proceeds from the day’s business and M-Pesa transactions.

The robbers also stole the victim’s mobile phone, which had been left charging in the shop, before escaping on a waiting motorcycle to an unknown destination.

The victim, aged 25, was rushed to Yala Level IV Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialised care.

Police documented the scene and launched investigations, including efforts to establish the type of firearm used in the robbery.
