The National Police Service Forensic Laboratory’s (NPSFL) Forensic Evidence Management Unit (FEMU) took yet another significant step toward strengthening professionalism, credibility, and excellence in forensic science.
This follows a successful accreditation assessment conducted by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB).
On May 13, 2026, top DCI officials officially welcomed a delegation from the ANSI National Accreditation Board led by Natasha Wheatley during the opening ceremony of the accreditation assessment for FEMU.
The two-day evaluation aimed to assess the Unit’s management systems against internationally recognised accreditation requirements.
The assessment team was tasked with conducting a fair, objective, and impartial review of FEMU’s operational standards and procedures.
Following the comprehensive assessment process, the much-anticipated results were unveiled during a closing ceremony held on May 14, 2026.
Based on the assessment techniques employed and the objective evidence reviewed, the ANAB team confirmed that the Forensic Evidence Management Unit (FEMU) had demonstrated the competence required to operate a management system that fulfils all applicable accreditation standards.
Wheatley commended the unit for its dedication and commitment to excellence, expressing confidence in its ability to consistently operate within the required standards and effectively implement the provisions outlined in its management system.
While receiving the encouraging results, head of the unit Sospeter Munyi congratulated the Unit on its remarkable achievement and challenged other forensic units to emulate the same standards.
He emphasised that accreditation enhances professional confidence and reinforces the credibility of forensic evidence presented before courts of law, a key factor that continues to position the NPSFL among the best in the region.
Also present during the closing ceremony were Deputy Director of Forensic Services Mwangi Gillon, alongside heads of various units within the forensic laboratory.
Mwangi emphasised that, the realisation of any accreditation is not an invitation into slumber but a strong call for continued monitoring and evaluation in the view of sustaining and improving standards that support the very accreditation status.
This accreditation milestone is a declaration that NPSFL continues to rise to the highest global standards, delivering credible, court-ready forensic science in the service of justice.
