João Pedro Cavaco Cancelo is a Portuguese professional footballer born on 27 May 1994 in Barreiro, Portugal.
He plays primarily as a full-back, known for his versatility on both flanks, attacking prowess, technical ability, and crossing.
He currently plays for La Liga club Barcelona on loan from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and represents the Portugal national team.
Cancelo has established himself as one of the modern game’s most dynamic full-backs through his career across several top European leagues.
Siblings
João has one younger brother named Pedro Cancelo.
In January 2013, when João was 18 and Pedro was around 9 or 10 years old, their mother Filomena was killed in a car accident on the A2 motorway in Seixal.
Both brothers were in the car but sustained only minor injuries.
This devastating loss forced João to step up as the leader of the family, supporting his brother and their father José, who struggled with depression.
João has often spoken about setting an example for Pedro and drawing motivation from his family responsibilities.
Pedro pursued a football career as well, though at a lower level, and has been linked with clubs like Vitória Guimarães in the past.
