Jesse Puljujärvi is a Finnish professional ice hockey player, currently playing as a winger for Genève-Servette HC in Switzerland’s National League (NL).

Born on May 7, 1998, in Älvkarleby, Sweden, to Finnish parents, he moved with his family to Tornio, Finland, at the age of four.

He identifies culturally as Finnish, holds dual Finnish-Swedish citizenship, and represents Finland in international competitions.

Puljujärvi is known for his combination of size, skating ability, skill, and a playing style he has compared to that of Evgeni Malkin.

He was once considered one of the top prospects in the world and was selected fourth overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

    Siblings

Jesse has one sibling, a sister named Jenna.

They were raised in Tornio by his parents, Jari and Tuula Puljujärvi, after the family relocated from Sweden.

While Puljujärvi has spoken about his upbringing and early move to Oulu at age 13 to pursue hockey with Oulun Kärpät, details about her sister remain private.

    Career

Puljujärvi began playing ice hockey and bandy in Tornio before moving alone to Oulu at 13 to join Kärpät’s junior system.

He quickly rose through the ranks, showcasing exceptional talent in youth leagues.

He made his Liiga debut with Kärpät at just 16 years old in 2014, becoming the youngest player in the team’s history to appear and score a point.

In his first full Liiga season (2015–16), he recorded 28 points in 50 games and contributed in the playoffs as Kärpät won bronze.

Drafted by the Oilers, Puljujärvi made his NHL debut in 2016.

His early NHL years were inconsistent, with time split between Edmonton and the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors due to adjustment challenges and injuries, including hip surgery.

He returned to Kärpät for the 2019–20 season, where he excelled as a top-line player before rejoining the Oilers.

In 2023, he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Subsequent stints included time with the Pittsburgh Penguins and a brief period with the Florida Panthers organization in 2025, involving AHL play with the Charlotte Checkers.

In July 2025, he signed a two-year deal with Genève-Servette HC in Switzerland.

    Accolades

At the 2016 World Junior Championships, Puljujärvi led Finland to gold with a dominant performance of 5 goals and 17 points in 7 games, earning tournament MVP, Best Forward, and a spot on the All-Star team.

He also won gold at the 2016 IIHF World U18 Championships, becoming the first European player to claim both U20 and U18 gold in the same year.

Earlier, he contributed to a silver medal at the 2015 U18 Worlds.

In domestic play, he won the Liiga championship with Kärpät in 2015 and has received recognition such as the Heino Pulli Award as U18 rookie of the year in Finland.

He was named to various junior all-star teams and earned high rankings among European prospects leading into the 2016 NHL Draft.
