Ruhamya Kainerugaba, son of Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England. He completed the academy’s Officer Cadet Course and graduated on August 5, 2026.
Ruhamya graduated alongside fellow Ugandan Officer Cadet Bakira Ruyondo. The two were among hundreds of officer cadets who passed out during a graduation parade held at the academy’s historic campus in Camberley, Surrey.
Ruhamya serves in the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) with the rank of Private.
Ruhamya’s graduation follows the path taken by his father nearly three decades earlier. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba joined the UPDF as an Officer Cadet in 1999 and graduated from Sandhurst in 2000, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.
The academy is the British Army’s premier officer training institution and is widely regarded as one of the most respected military training institutions in the world. It trains officers for the British Army and armed forces from other countries, with a history dating back to the establishment of the Royal Military College in 1801.
Ruhamya is among a growing number of sons of East African leaders to train at the academy, including Lt. Ian Kagame, son of Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, who graduated as a Second Lieutenant in 2022.
Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara congratulated Ruhamya and Ruyondo in a post on X, writing: “Congratulations to our own young men who have made it at the prestigious military academy pass-out”
