Pedestrian fatalities decline in July 2026 amid stepped-up enforcement

Pedestrian fatalities declined in July 2026 amid intensified enforcement and compliance checks targeting road users who fail to use designated crossing points, including footbridges, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said.

According to the NTSA July 2026 Road Safety Status Report, 146 pedestrians were killed in road crashes during the month, down from 178 fatalities recorded in July 2025.

The figures represent a 17.98 per cent decline in pedestrian deaths year-on-year.

The authority attributed the reduction partly to ongoing enforcement operations aimed at encouraging pedestrians to use designated crossing points and comply with traffic regulations.

“We attribute this decline to, among other interventions, the ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at encouraging pedestrians to use designated crossing points and comply with traffic rules,” the authority said.

Despite the improvement, pedestrians remain among the most vulnerable road users, particularly in areas where motorists and pedestrians share busy roads and highways.

The NTSA urged pedestrians to use designated crossing points, including footbridges, obey traffic signals and exercise caution when crossing roads.

The authority also called on all road users to prioritize safety and comply with traffic regulations to sustain the downward trend in fatalities.

“To further reduce fatalities among vulnerable road users, we urge all pedestrians to always use designated crossing points including footbridges, obey traffic signals, and prioritize their safety on the roads,” NTSA said.

Dozens of people are killed weekly in separate road accidents leaving many families suffering. Road fatalities have continued to rise despite ongoing enforcement and public awareness campaigns. Authorities attribute most crashes to reckless overtaking, speeding and drunk driving, while mechanical defects such as worn-out tyres, faulty brakes and poor vehicle maintenance have also been cited as major contributing factors.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service have repeatedly urged motorists to observe traffic rules, maintain roadworthy vehicles and exercise extra caution, particularly on highways and accident-prone sections of the road network in the country.
