Eurozone Inflation Hits 3.3% in August 2026, Highest in Three Years

The surge in inflation was largely driven by energy costs. Energy prices rose by 14.3% in the year to August, accelerating sharply from 10.3% in July. The primary cause is the ongoing war between the US and Iran, which has led to the near-total closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy trade route.

Services inflation eased to 3.0% in August from 3.3% in July. Food, alcohol, and tobacco inflation remained unchanged at 1.2%. Non-energy industrial goods inflation increased to 1.2% from 0.9%.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco, edged down to 2.4% in August from 2.5% in July.This suggests that the rise in energy costs has not yet spread extensively to services and other prices.

Among the eurozone’s largest economies, Spain posted the highest inflation rate at 4.5% in August, up from 3.9% in July. Italy and France each saw increases to 3.2% and 2.7% respectively, while Germany edged up to 2.9% from 2.8%. Lithuania recorded the highest rate among all eurozone countries covered by the flash estimate, at 5.8%.

Economists expect inflation to remain well above target into next year, as higher gas and food prices put additional upward pressure on the index.The European Central Bank is widely expected to raise interest rates at its meeting on September 10, 2026, following a previous hike in June.
