Bata Kenya Managing Director Abbas Shirazi is missing after a fatal road accident in Limuru, Kiambu County, in which a 57-year-old pedestrian was killed.
The accident occurred on September 5, 2026, at about 7:50pm in the Redhill area along the Kabuku-Ndenderu road, according to police.
Police identified the vehicle involved as a Toyota Prado, which was being driven by Shirazi, 53.
The pedestrian, identified as John Mbai Muinu, 57, was struck as he crossed the road from the right side towards the left, facing the general direction of Ndenderu.
According to the police account, the Prado was travelling from Kabuku towards Ndenderu when it hit Muinu.
He suffered severe head injuries and multiple fractures and died at the scene before he could receive medical assistance.
His body was later moved to the Tigoni Level IV Hospital mortuary, where it was preserved pending an autopsy to establish the precise cause of death.
Police officers who visited the scene documented extensive damage to the Prado, including damage to its front section and body, as well as a shattered windscreen consistent with the impact.
The vehicle was escorted to a police station and detained pending inspection as investigations into the fatal crash continued.
The case has now attracted heightened attention following reports that Shirazi subsequently left the country.
It was not immediately clear whether he had been formally charged or whether police had issued any orders restricting his travel as investigations continued.
The circumstances surrounding his reported departure from Kenya, and whether investigators are seeking his return to face questioning or possible charges, remain unclear.
Police said they are investigating the incident and will take the necessary action later.
The incident comes as police continue investigations into the circumstances of the fatal collision.
Fatal accidents have been on the rise amid efforts to contain the same.
The number of pedestrians being killed in accidents has also been rising forcing authorities to intervene and arrest those failing to use footbridges. Authorities attribute most crashes to reckless overtaking, speeding and drunk driving, while mechanical defects such as worn-out tyres, faulty brakes and poor vehicle maintenance have also been cited as major contributing factors.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service have repeatedly urged motorists to observe traffic rules, maintain roadworthy vehicles and exercise extra caution, particularly on highways and accident-prone sections of the road network in the country.
