A police officer shot and killed a 25-year-old man after he allegedly attacked him with a wooden club during a confrontation at Mutune Shopping Centre in Kitui Central Sub-County.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 11, 2026, after the officer reportedly went to the shopping centre to reinforce a colleague who was responding to an earlier mob-injustice incident in neighbouring Kwa Ngindu Village.
The officer was carrying a G3 rifle when he encountered members of the public, among them the deceased, identified as Moses Wambua.
An eyewitness assisting police with investigations told officers that Wambua allegedly slapped the police officer and repeatedly struck him on the forehead with a Maasai rungu fitted with a nut.
The two wrestled, causing the officer’s rifle to fall to the ground and its magazine to detach.
The deceased was allegedly heard demanding his sword from the officer.
The officer reportedly retrieved the rifle, reinserted the magazine and fired several shots at Wambua, who was attempting to enter a Mazda Demio.
Police said the officer sustained deep cuts to his forehead during the confrontation and was rushed to Kitui County Referral Hospital, where he was receiving treatment in serious condition.
Officers who visited the scene recovered a Maasai rungu fitted with a nut, a whip, three unspent blank cartridges, two spent cartridges and one live 7.62×51mm bullet.
The officer’s G3 rifle, loaded with 10 live rounds and bearing blood stains, was confiscated for investigations.
The body of Wambua, who sustained a gunshot wound to the left chest, was taken to the Kitui County Referral Hospital mortuary pending further police action.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing.
Meanwhile, police in Kenyanya, Kisii County, have launched investigations into the murder of an 80-year-old woman whose body was discovered in her kitchen at Mokubo Village.
The deceased, identified as Roda Kwamboka Nyambengo, was found lying face down in a pool of blood on Friday, September 11, 2026.
Police visited the scene after receiving a report from a member of the public.
Police said the woman had sustained deep cut injuries to the back of her head. A blood-stained panga, suspected to have been used in the killing, was recovered at the scene and kept as an exhibit.
Investigators established that the deceased lived alone. She had reportedly been seen the previous day, but neighbours became suspicious after finding her house locked from the outside on Friday morning.
The neighbours reportedly broke into the house and discovered her body.
The body was transferred to Ogembo Sub-County Hospital mortuary for preservation, pending a postmortem examination.
Police said the motive of the murder had not been established, as investigations continued.
