At least five people, including two women and two juveniles, died in a road accident involving a PSV bus and a Toyota IST along the Gilgil-Nakuru Road on Sunday night.
Police said the accident occurred around 11 p.m. on September 13, 2026, in the Kamugunda area. The crash involved a Mercedes-Benz PSV bus, and a Toyota IST.
Police said the bus was travelling from Gilgil to Nakuru when its driver allegedly failed to stay in his lane and drove into the acceleration lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming Toyota IST.
Four passengers in the Toyota IST — two female adults and two juveniles — sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota IST, who was initially seriously injured, was rushed to St. Joseph Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The bodies were removed from the scene and taken to PNN Funeral Home for preservation, pending identification and postmortem examinations.
Both vehicles were towed to the police station yard, where they were detained pending inspection as investigations into the accident continue.
Police said the accident was among those reported on Sunday alone that left at least 16 people dead. The victims included five passengers, six pedestrians, four riders and a driver.
Police said at least 15 people were left with serious injuries in the accidents. They included eight pedestrians, five riders and two pillion passengers.
There has been a surge in fatal injuries involving pedestrians amid a campaign to address the menace. Some of the victims are knocked to death near footbridges, police say adding they avoid using the bridges.
Authorities have been arresting those avoiding the footbridges as part of efforts to address the menace.

Officials have been running campaigns to address the menace. Officials say the leading causes of fatal crashes included hit-and-runs, tyre bursts, and vehicles and motorcycles losing control.
Also overtaking improperly and failing to keep the proper lane resulting in head-on collisions are mentioned as causes of the accidents.
